Part 2- Your Journey Begins

1. It is time to set sail for America, as you wait for your ship to depart write your first journal entry about why you are leaving, the conditions of the ship, and your thoughts and feelings. You may include other information such as people traveling with you, or other people that you have met.
- Your journal entries will be completed in Edmodo, please be sure that your journal entries are at least two paragraphs and all have a date. Your first journal entry can be posted in Edmodo under the first journal assignment.

- The videos below detail information about the journey to America, the second video can be started at the 6 minute mark and ended at the 11 minute mark.

2. Complete 1 more journal entry about your trip. Post this entry under the assignment Journal Entry #2 on Edmodo.

3. After more than a week at sea you sea on the horizon a blurry figure, and relief hits you, it is the Statue of Liberty! You know your journey at sea is complete, and now it is time for you to make your way through Ellis Island. Though you are tired and weak from your travels, it is important that you pass your tests so that you do not get sent back home.
- Ellis Island can be another journey all in itself. For some it will result in joy, others it will mean a trip back home. What will happen to you? Click the link to go through the parts of Ellis Island. http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/tour/
- The second video above will also give you great details about your trip through Ellis Island, you can finish watching the video (from the 11 minute mark on).
- Write two journal entries about the intake process at Ellis Island. Use the names of specific procedures and be sure to tell of your thoughts and feelings. Your fourth journal entry should end at the Kissing Post. Please post your third and fourth journals under the correct assignments on the Edmodo website.
4. Congratulations you have passed your health tests, have the necessary amount of money and are able to enter the United States. You will find that the United States is full of opportunities as you can live in the city and find work at factories or other type of trades. Another option is to move West and buy some land. You will need to choose what is best for you, just know that there will be difficulties no matter what you choose.
- Immigrants settled in different parts of the country for a number of reasons. You will need to decide where your final destination will be.
- Some immigrants settled in the same area as people from their country, others followed to where they could find work, others had little choice in where they could go due to lack of money. - You will need to write two journal entries about your life once you have settled in the United States. Be sure to tell us all about your job, or your parents' jobs, the treatment you are receiving from other citizens, any important happenings, and your overall quality of life. Turn your fifth and sixth journal entries into Edmodo under the correct assignment posts.
